Daily #211: P.E.A.C.E. vs Dose One

An old clip from (i think scribblejam? ) in 1999, P.E.A.C.E. from freestlye fellowship in a battle from Dose One of anticon.

Actually a pretty cool battle, just because its weird. At the time, Anticon had rallied some kind of weird fanbase of white kids who were waiting for rap to be pretentious and weird, instead of soulful and angry, and anticon was a good stab at filling that void. Around 2000 (give or take a year), things like (the now defunct) hiphopinfiinity.com tried to capitilize on the market, and a lot of minor MC’s got ground.

While they did bring a new style to the table, they often did not match up to their attitudes (their attitudes being that they were going to make hip-hop better by being different or something). This was similar to the rise of rhymesayser, with atmosphere, eyedea, and brother ali, and in fact they have been closely affiliated at times. The whole scene was not limited to that, and these guys made a legitmate run, but erred on the side of pretense.

For reference, this is an oldie but goodie from the aforemention dose-one:

Interesting, unorthodox, and obviously they put some time into it. Dose continued to work with anticon, released several projects as CLouDDead (or whatever), and is still working today.

That being said, P.E.A.C.E. killed. Props to Dose, though, I would never have even tried, let alone just kept up.

Daily #211: Savior Remix.

[ savior (alias remix) -- slug, eyedea, sole ]

Nice remix, never heard this, but came across it trying to find an easily playable version of the original. The original beat is pretty good, too. Unfortunately this is one of the few standout tracks from the errrr … unfortunately named “Music for the Advancement of Hip-Hop”. Turns out hip-hop advanced without “the pedestrian”.

Daily #210: Four more.

Filed under: daily — scrame @ 3:05 pm

I am still running in catchup mode, trying to install some kind of simple fucking video editor, but am still flailing (windows movie maker, not work, virtual dub, no get). And am still a few days behind in the catchup race, so I figure another good cop-out spacefiller would be excellent.

Thats what this is, but believe me, I am slaving away at making your dreams reality.

Daily #209: Shiren.

I finished the fifth game in the Phoenix Wright ne Ace Attorney games, and there is nothing left for the DS, so I have been looking for something the fill the pointless void of staring at a screen and pressing ‘A’ while at the same time, being able to save state immediately. I have a NES emulator which is fantastic except for the fact the it utterly fails to save batteries and save states on the old-school pieces, and that the new ones always have shitty save points, or weird restrictions, which makes it difficult to play for 12 minutes when your fucking train is stuck.

Anyway, I saw in reference to nethack, that there was a game “Shiren the Wanderer” that had similar mechanics, but was DS and not just some obtuse primitive typewriter with ANSI colors. I was pointed towards Shiren, which is a DS remake of an old SNES game, but is a brutal, unforgiving, dungeon crawler. I got it from gamefly, didn’t get anywhere, or try much, and sent it back.

Now, with a particular timekill gap I am trying to fill, I have come back to it, and am surprised at the lack of coverage/tips, or rally anything related to it. At least to playing it, they do have a 50 level tutorial that I am working through, but I keep trying to take a run up the mountain, and keep losing, but might finally understand the mechanic of it. Just keep going.

This is an interesting article I stumbled across recently, but didn’t read until I started playing again. Also there is now a wii version, but I’m on majoras mask if I’m going to be working through wii stuff.

Daily #208: Tokyo Drivel.

[ still regurgitation. Response on the internet about visiting Tokyo. ]

Tokyo:
1) Akihabara is a place for hardcore geeks of all kinds, not just hardware. If you like collectibles, anime, consumer electronics, vintage music gear, stores packed floor to ceiling with every obscure console or home video game ever made, or just raw electrical parts, you can find it there. Along with cheap tools and strange gadgets, like keychain devices that interrupt IR remote controls for a cheap gag. The problem is how to find it. Check it out in the early afternoon most any day of the week. Most things start to close around 8.

2) The oft-discussed harajuku has a few areas, but definitely check out the freak bridge between the station and yoyogi park on a weekend, which is also a good time to see the park itself.

3) Shinjuku is OK, but its not too touristy except for how many lights there are. You might like Don Quixote’s, a bizarre outlet store for just about anything, but they have those in several locations; the same goes for Tokyu Hands, another unusual department store.

4) Shibuya is a must for a sightseeing trip. Check the harajuku exit in the evening, especially weekends, for an overwhelming flood of people, the area is full of stores, clubs, and restaurants.

5) Personally, I would avoid roppongi, but some people like that scene.

6) The city itself is huge, most of the stops mentioned here are just one station on the central line. If you had a better idea of what you wanted to see (museums, temples, etc), you would almost certainly find many more locations.

7) The train will bankrupt you.

Kyoto is the subject of several tour books itself, and with a good guide, you will never forget it. It is also a stark contrast to Tokyo. I have only been there as a visitor, so I am sure there are others who can give more detail. (See sanjyusangendo).

Miyajima (by hiroshima) is also cool, but dont let the deer get too close, they try to get in your pockets.

A++1! WOULD INTERNET AGAIN!

(anyone else remember when cartoons were entertaining artistic labors of love and not just self-referential markov chain brain spam of mean spirited cultural references and ironically indifferent arrogance splayed across “flash quality graphics” with less subtlety and lazier animation than those Xerox-era Hanna-Barbera “amazing race” cartoons? Y’know, the ones with mutley?)

Daily #206: The sweet spot.

[An old draft I am publishing now.]

There are conflicting schools of advice about making a piece of software worthwhile.

Before I get into that, I want to mention that a lot of difficult problems _have_ decent out of the box solutions, where 10 or 15 years ago, you would be forced to invent the wheel. Most of these are abstractable service layers so that even the complex puzzle-solving bits can be swapped out (like with a rails app: you can swap between mongrel and passenger, or with Java/Hibernate: you can stub MySql with HSql)

Now, in terms of projects, we can find seemingly conflicting advice from Paul Bucheit. He wrote the prototype for gmail in a day, but then spent two years leading a team at google before releasing the ‘beta’.

I had some other points I was going to make, but in trying to find the endpoints, turns out there is a good middle: http://paulbuchheit.blogspot.com/2010/02/if-your-product-is-great-it-doesnt-need.html

It is important that you have a good idea and a vision for how it should be accomplished before you spend 2 years leading a team of people to launch it. If you have the good fortune to be in a position where you could just spend two years working on a single project.

Ideas are worth pursuing, but most of them aren’t worth two years. The simplest projects can run for years, so it is important to know that what you are working on is something that you can keep doing, and aren’t just running it for a quick cashout. Because that rarely works.

Its unrealistic to expect people to try lots of different ideas, but be committed to seeing ideas through.
If someone in your group can’t make a working example in a day or two, it probably won’t happen.
If your group is mostly people with titles and ideas, it will probably never happen, no matter how much money you throw at it.

In software, it is better to ask for forgiveness than permission. If you are bogged down in maintenance and operations, and can think of a feature or change or script that would make your life easier, do it.

It won’t always work, and sometimes will be rejected or won’t work. You can discuess it with opionated jackasses like me in meetings, or you could write the code and make it work.

Meetings and discussions are mostly unproductive and distracting.

Daily #205: Interstitial.

Obviously, I am still playing catchup. I have had a lot of busy days the last couple weeks or months, and just couldn’t keep up. This can feel disparaging, but having gone through a few nanowrimos and shitty work deadlines, I do know that its usually better to catch up than give up, so I am burning through and catching up. Consider it a mid-year vacation.

Naturally, I have been doing random side projects and what not, but also going to weddings, finishing the last damn Ace Attorney game (#5 Edgeworth). And thats fine. I was even ahead there for a couple days, but the important part is to keep going. The resolution was ambitious, and I have certainly got more than 30 minutes a day cumulative for this project, so whatever.

I’m still behind a week or so, but catching up. I’ve got a long commitment in mid-august, and again will not have easy computer access, but there are times in life that you do need to concentrate on things other than vanity projects.

Unless vanity projects pay the bills. This one doesn’t.

Anyway, scrubbing through some videos and trying to boil down some clips. More to come.

peace.

Daily #204: Internet tripe.

[functuall explains rush sample history by B.A.D II]

Great track from metafilter this morning. Of course some sheltered dickhead made this comment:

Mr. Markhum would do well to move out of his parents’ attic, buy an iPod® and find a significant other.
posted by punkfloyd at 10:15 AM on August 1

Oops. I am an idiot. The teacher should do what I said.
posted by punkfloyd at 10:16 AM on August 1

Now, I don’t normally get annoyed at dipshits on the internet, but something about his name rubbed me wrong. Also, the video was cool.

Since it was at the end of the thread an no one will see it, and I wasted some time typing it, so im reposting.

Wow, someone on the internet who names themselves with a portmentau of “punk” and “pink floyd” doesn’t appreciate someone who is passionate about obscure clash b-sides and music production history, and instead thinks he should get an iPod and has nothing else but to comment negatively on his judgement based on appearances.

Seriously, punkfloyd, fuck you. There is a big wide world of music you can’t get on iTunes, and there are a lot of people in this world with home studios and significant others.

This guy made the world a little bit better with his geekery, and all you can do is encourage consumerism and bland conformity.

punk-floyd indeed.

And your second comment only needed the first sentence.

Also, I had been slamming mimosas all morning, so thats why I used the word “world” 3 times in two sentences. At least it was terse.

Daily #203: Chino’s got my back!

Well, my initial foray into twitter was pointless, but then I realized that I just wanted to get a personalized message from the best rapper in the world, Chino XL (c’mon, you know its true, check Nunca!).

[chino xl - nunca]

This what he sounds like these days:

[chino xl - 90 bars of intervention]

Yes, of course if you actually have any chino albums you know that he includes it as a bonus track on pretty much everything cd-length since “here to save you all”. Thats not important.

Important is that he finally acknowledged the worlds #1 Chino XL fan, me.

AT LAST, RECOGNITION!
