A friend pointed this one to me:
Available here.
For some reason no one I know who was not in california remembers this track.
Crappy VEVO video:
(probably has ads, sorry)
But the real gem is the full length track, fortunately with lyrics:
Note especially the verse starting at 3:40. For some reason its left out of the video. I’m impressed someone even thought they could get lyrics out of it.
An old clip from (i think scribblejam? ) in 1999, P.E.A.C.E. from freestlye fellowship in a battle from Dose One of anticon.
Actually a pretty cool battle, just because its weird. At the time, Anticon had rallied some kind of weird fanbase of white kids who were waiting for rap to be pretentious and weird, instead of soulful and angry, and anticon was a good stab at filling that void. Around 2000 (give or take a year), things like (the now defunct) hiphopinfiinity.com tried to capitilize on the market, and a lot of minor MC’s got ground.
While they did bring a new style to the table, they often did not match up to their attitudes (their attitudes being that they were going to make hip-hop better by being different or something). This was similar to the rise of rhymesayser, with atmosphere, eyedea, and brother ali, and in fact they have been closely affiliated at times. The whole scene was not limited to that, and these guys made a legitmate run, but erred on the side of pretense.
For reference, this is an oldie but goodie from the aforemention dose-one:
Interesting, unorthodox, and obviously they put some time into it. Dose continued to work with anticon, released several projects as CLouDDead (or whatever), and is still working today.
That being said, P.E.A.C.E. killed. Props to Dose, though, I would never have even tried, let alone just kept up.
[ savior (alias remix) -- slug, eyedea, sole ]
Nice remix, never heard this, but came across it trying to find an easily playable version of the original. The original beat is pretty good, too. Unfortunately this is one of the few standout tracks from the errrr … unfortunately named “Music for the Advancement of Hip-Hop”. Turns out hip-hop advanced without “the pedestrian”.

Great track from metafilter this morning. Of course some sheltered dickhead made this comment:
Mr. Markhum would do well to move out of his parents’ attic, buy an iPod® and find a significant other.

Oops. I am an idiot. The teacher should do what I said.

Now, I don’t normally get annoyed at dipshits on the internet, but something about his name rubbed me wrong. Also, the video was cool.
Since it was at the end of the thread an no one will see it, and I wasted some time typing it, so im reposting.
Wow, someone on the internet who names themselves with a portmentau of “punk” and “pink floyd” doesn’t appreciate someone who is passionate about obscure clash b-sides and music production history, and instead thinks he should get an iPod and has nothing else but to comment negatively on his judgement based on appearances.
Seriously, punkfloyd, fuck you. There is a big wide world of music you can’t get on iTunes, and there are a lot of people in this world with home studios and significant others.
This guy made the world a little bit better with his geekery, and all you can do is encourage consumerism and bland conformity.
punk-floyd indeed.
And your second comment only needed the first sentence.
Also, I had been slamming mimosas all morning, so thats why I used the word “world” 3 times in two sentences. At least it was terse.
Well, my initial foray into twitter was pointless, but then I realized that I just wanted to get a personalized message from the best rapper in the world, Chino XL (c’mon, you know its true, check Nunca!).
[chino xl - nunca]
This what he sounds like these days:
[chino xl - 90 bars of intervention]
Yes, of course if you actually have any chino albums you know that he includes it as a bonus track on pretty much everything cd-length since “here to save you all”. Thats not important.
Important is that he finally acknowledged the worlds #1 Chino XL fan, me.
With this I think I am officially caught up, even though its technically A day behind.
I’ve got an awful lot on my mind, so I think I might just post some awesome rap videos, instead. [redacted, just videos.]

(ok, not a rap video, but they talk fast, it has tom waits, and is awesome.)
I always liked this one for the imagery, not really defending the lyricism, but he did manage a big club hit, and this is the group that produced lil wayne (not a fan, but its always interesting to see the origins. Lil wayne might actually be in this video, but he’d be about 13-14, I remember he had a source interview and was completely incoherent, could mostly talk about his necklace. whatevs.)

[juvenile - ha]
And just a random classic:

I know I promised more, but I’m in major ketchup mode.

Only managed about a page so far today, but it was friday. If nothing else I can definitely catch up over the weekend. In fact I caught up the last two weekends even though I had guests and was out of state and shit.
Anyway, some other shit:
Uncommon Valor is a Jedi Mind Tricks track that really shows that their best works are collaborations and that they can really bring out the best of other performers the way prince paul can ( though prince paul will probably remain the master at this ). The track features RA the Rugged Man, an unprolific but remarkable MC and is about Vietnam. RA’s verse is based on his fathers experience, and is a powerfully emotional and intense verse delivered in a dense and almost distant monotone.
Here is the track set to a nice edit from some punisher comics. The lyrics are available on some horrible lyrics site that you can probably google.
Anyway, there is a nice followup here
And, I’m even lamer because I have pics, but not an easy way to upload them until tomorrow.
In exchange, you should download this album by the Circle Jerks: VI. If this link stops working, then you should just go find the album on your own. Next time around, I’ll recommend dead milkmen: beelzebubba.
Everything was cooler when you were 12.
Peace.
